Whether its a quick pit-stop to enjoy a hot drink and shelter from the weather during a long winter walk, or the desire to relax into a solitary few days in summer with just the sound of Golden Eagles overhead for company, many visitors to Ardtornish enjoy the shelter offered by Leacraithnaich bothy at Loch Tearnait.

Leacraithnaich has been carefully maintained for years by one of Scotland’s great rural institutions, the Mountain Bothies Association. The MBA maintains a network of bothies throughout Scotland’s hills, all of which are open to walkers and climbers free of charge, in return for observing some basic rules. Whilst there is no charge for Leacraithnaich, we would suggest a donation is made for the upkeep of the building.

The Bothy is remotely located in the wilds of Ardtornish; it provides basic, rustic accommodation of sleeping platforms and wood burning stoves. Like most bothies, there is no electricity or running water but it is close to running burns for access to water. The bothy does not have a toilet although we’ve suggested a suitable area for use along with a shovel. We ask that you leave the place as you’ve found it, if you catch our drift!

Staying in a bothy is an unusual and diverse choice of holiday accommodation, just perfect for those with a sense of adventure. You’ll be totally alone with exception of your wildlife neighbours – red deer, stags and the occasional Golden Eagle are all fairly regular visitors. Just be sure to observe the bothy code and make sure you leave it in a more homely state than than you found it for the next happy campers!
