Activities - On Water

On water activities that will make your stay even better...

Bathing and Water sports.

Loch Aline and the Sound of Mull provide ample scope for all forms of Water sports, including sub-aqua and wreck diving (Air can be obtained locally), sailing and windsurfing. Those preferring fresh water can bathe and barbecue from the sandy beach at Loch Arienas

Fishing and Boating.

Salmon and sea trout fishing permits are available on the River Aline, Loch Arienas and Loch Doire nam Mart. Loch Tearnait and other hill lochs yield indigenous brown trout. Fly fishing from the banks of these lochs is included in the rent. Salmon and sea trout fishing and the hire of boats and outboard motors should be booked well in advance. For those wishing to bring their own boats launching facilities and safe moorings are available. Sea fishing is also available and the area is known amongst specialists for its record catches of Common Skate, and other deep sea fish.

Salmon and Trout Fishing

(all prices include VAT at 17.5%)

In 2006, 17 Salmon and 24 Sea Trout  were caught. For 2007, we had 45 Salmon and 112 Sea Trout. Sea-Trout numbers for 2001 were in the region of 70. Until fifteen years ago 400 was not an uncommon number.

We released 30-40,000 unfed Salmon fry into the River Aline system in 2007 and will be doing the same for the next 4 years, so hopefully the Salmon fishing will return to its former catch levels - 120 Salmon in 1992! ALL SALMON AND SEA TROUT FISHING IS CATCH & RELEASE.

The record Brown Trout on Loch Arienas was caught by Oliver Paget in April 2006 and weighed in at 16 1/2lbs. Prior to this heaviest were 10lbs in 2001, 8lbs4oz in 2000 and 2 at 7lbs in 1999. in 2007 the 2 best brownies reported were both 7lbs and were caught by regular visitors to Ardtornish, David Sidaway and John Grottick. Can they get bigger? The hill lochs and burns also give excellent Brown Trout fishing - expect the fish to average more 1/2 to 1lb though with the exceptional 2lber.
