On land activities that will make your stay even better...
Ardtornish is a good base for both short and long expeditions by car. The coast road along the Sound of Mull to Drimnin (B849) takes under an hour, the round trip from Strontian to Lochailort and Glenfinnan (A861) takes three or four hours. The ski slopes of GlenCoe and Aonach Mor can be reached 1.5 hours.
MacBraynes ferries run regularly from Lochaline to Fishnish on Mull, providing an opportunity to visit Mull and Iona, Staffa and Fingal's Cave.
Walking
There are a variety of hill and coastal walks to suit all tastes. Sporting activities and the importance of conservation make certain restrictions inevitable. Access to parts of the hill is limited by deer stalking during September and October. As the weather is variable, waterproof coats and boots are essential. Drying rooms are provided.
Relaxation
Ardtornish is an excellent place to enjoy a change from the usual routine of life and to have a rest. Many people sleep better in the soft highland air than ever before.
Natural History
With sightings of 136 different bird species, four designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest, and 20 miles of varied coastline, ecological interests are catered for. The flora is especially rich. Guided wildlife walks are arranged by the Scottish Wildlife Trust during the summer.
Gardens and Grounds
Ardtornish House stands in 28 acres of well-planted policies. An extensive range of mature rhododendrons and azaleas contrast with specimen conifers.
The interest of the garden is continuous from early flowering rhododendrons and daffodils in April, through the main flowering of shrubs under carpeted with bluebells in May and June to the Autumn colouring of Acer, Berberis and Cercidiphyllum in October.
The many rare shrubs include Embothrium, Enkianthus and Eucryphia.
Keen horticulturists should come in May and June to enjoy the early Summer beauty of a woodland garden.
